St. Albans market promotes local artists
By: Annabelle Blair
Guests will have an opportunity to support local artists, craftspeople, bakers, and performers at the Pop Up Shop Artist market in St. Albans—open for business three different weekends before Christmas.
Market dates are Saturday, Nov. 25, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 26, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 17, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, Dec. 23 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
It will be located at Innovations In Creative Arts, at 198-20 Linden Blvd.
Adrienne Whaley, executive director of Innovations in Creative Arts, said the studio and pop-up shop is located in a historically creative neighborhood, which she hopes to continue building through supporting local talent.
“Part of the mission (of Innovations) is to become a home for local artists, of which there are many in the southeast Queens area,” she said.
The market will feature unique and hand-crafted items such as jewelry, T-shirts, candles, soap, clothing, accessories, books, framed spoken word poetry, baked goods, gourmet food and paintings. “It gives the public a chance to talk to artists directly and to purchase signed copy,” Whaley said.
Hector Cruz, a tutor in 3-D computer modeling and graphics is one of the artists who will participate in the pop-up shop. “I want to draw more awareness and attention—so others are not intimidated and don’t feel left out by not participating in such a project (computer graphics),” he said.
Althea Shuler, a cake artist who produces sculpted and baked cakes, will also be peddling her wares. She operates a home-based business and uses a commercial kitchen to perfect her products.
“I’ll be bringing new desserts and different flavors and my tried-and-true bestsellers,” Shuler said. Her selection of goods to sell includes Jack Daniels and sweet potato bundt cakes and pink champagne cupcakes.

Why Did You Stop, When Art Has So Much To Offer?
It seems that life these days can feel hectic. We become so busy and so focused that often, as adults and parents, we overlook easy ways to de-stress, unwind, rejuvenate, and inspire ourselves. Discovering a new creative outlet, or reintroducing yourself to a hobby or craft that you used to do, is a great way to enjoy a little relaxation, time by yourself, as a means to meet new people, or perhaps to spend a couple of hours with friends.
Whether painting, sewing, baking, drawing, make soap or candles, crocheting, sculpting, or designing a wearable art piece, think about engagement in arts as a necessary part of your life.
It is true that arts and crafts sounds like a broad category, a non-specific construction paper type thing. But the arts offers many forms and varieties bringing color, new ideas, forms, and shapes into existence. Your mind is free to travel within it’s own corridors and compartments aligned with your hands and body to bring life to what was just a moment ago, a thought. Your mind is free to solve problems, resolve the intangible into the touchable. You watch yourself as you create something new, beautiful, unique, amazing, or improved from the last time.
Once you walk into the Studio, you automatically begin to unwind. The stress b fades away, a smile embraces your face, you’re in that zone, that place of creative peace. And here lies the necessity for adults, to return to that place of creative peace as frequently as possible. It is liberating, reviving the soul, mind, and body. It is healthy, restoring a few ills, doubts, problems, and questions. It exhilarates, it restores, it is the reminder of how talented you truly are.
Taking time to explore new arts is more than worth it, painting lessons, sewing classes, drawing lessons, batik lessons, learning to make jewelry, mosaic tile, tee-shirts, cupcakes, etc. can be a priceless learning experience which can become a hobby, a part-time entrepreneurial endeavor, and an activity to share with friends and children.
One of the best ways to learn new arts and crafts is to stop procrastinating and sign up for a class. There are probably a few places in your area where you can to learn something new. Innovations In Creative Arts, is such a place. We are a warm nurturing art studio, with real artists and authentic material, supplies, and equipment. With rotational seasonal classes, there’s always something new to learn or a craft to continue expanding upon and perfecting.
Are you interested in learning how to knit or croquet? Or maybe you would rather learn to make your own pottery or even to paint pottery.
Similar to a “spa day”, time spent creating and doing, can become that mini-vacation that all adults need to remain sane, healthy, thinking in a more relaxed state, and connecting all of our parts and compartments.
A great way to spend time with friends and meet new ones who live close by. An arts and crafts night is for reconnecting the women in your life. What satisfaction there is making things yourself, making gifts for loved ones, If so, use arts and crafts to make the perfect present..
Take time today to check our class schedule or you can request a specific class such as Caustic Painting, stained glass designs, making terrariums, painting sneakers or furniture, even make lamps, or bottle candle holders. Perhaps you’d like to sign up for a really fun Wine and Paint Party, or Wine & Cooking? Paper Quilling? Trying out the Cricut machine or Genie?
Just remember, that it doesn’t matter which class that you choose, all arts offer the same amazing energy and mind boosting benefits; and you can take as many classes as you like.
As winter dawns upon us, now is the perfect time to select creative or dance classes of interest, invite a few friends, enroll together and have a great time relaxing, laughing, and reenergizing the soul.
